Diverse programme highlights development of NECC/Cs network

Visiting the Netherlands is always inspiring for anyone working in cycle route development, so it was no surprise that this year’s Annual National EuroVelo Coordination Centres and Coordinators’ (NECC/Cs) Meeting was one of the best attended to date.

Over 30 participants from over 20 different countries met in Arnhem on Monday 12th June to present best practices, exchange experiences and agree how to continue the successful development of EuroVelo across the continent.  The Netherlands is always a good place to start and following a warm introduction from Connie Bieze, a Deputy of the Province of Gelderland – our hosts for the day – Eric Nijland from Fietsplatform (the Dutch NECC) gave a detailed overview of the impressive work that they do.

As is traditional, the host was followed by the newest addition to the NECC/Cs network, which this year was Conbici from Spain.  Newly elected ECF Board Member Isabel Porras explained the complicated but ultimately successful process they have been through to bring the Spanish regions together to coordinate the development of cycle routes.

The ECF meanwhile presented the updated EuroVelo Signage ManualRoute Inspector Training on the European Certification Standard; the proposed EuroVelo IT Strategy; as well as news of the latest commercial developments.

There was also a presentation from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) who are increasingly open to collaborating with EuroVelo for mutual benefit.  Following an informative presentation by Michael Brennan the participants were split into two groups to discuss their relationship with the sports cycling organisations in their country and how we could work together going forward both on a national and European level.

Following the meeting the participants were given a guided tour of cycling infrastructure along EuroVelo 15 – Rhine Cycle Route, before retiring to a local restaurant to catch up with friends old and new.
