Opening of longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland

On Saturday 25th March, a spectacular 46km off-road cycling and walking trail along an old railway line between Waterford and Dungarvan offically opened to the public for the first time.  The route forms part of EuroVelo 1 – Atlantic Coast Route.

Local residents and visitors alike can now enjoy a beautiful journey taking in 11 bridges, three viaducts and a 400-metre tunnel.  The Greenway was developed at a cost of €15 million by Waterford City and County Council with the co-operation of local property owners and communities along the route and supporting funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

Interestingly, the date of Saturday 25th March was chosen for the opening because it was exactly 50 years ago to the day (25th March 1967) that the last train ran on the Waterford to Dungarvan line.
